I was displeased with having to use rclone to backup to google drive storage so I decided to rewrite the gdrive backend (heavily using Claude Fable). The new system is significantly faster and lower CPU usage, with a cleaner user experience. I’ve been using this on four machines now for several months and made some incremental improvements as I found gaps but generally am quite pleased with it now.

I posted some details here: [Update of Google Drive integration for performance · Issue #5734 · kopia/kopia · GitHub](https://github.com/kopia/kopia/issues/5734)

It is on a fork here: [GitHub - arsenixprime/kopia at gdrive-native-v2 · GitHub](https://github.com/arsenixprime/kopia/tree/gdrive-native-v2)

If anyone uses gdrive as a backend feel free to try it out!
