Backup never ending

I’ve got a backup that just keeps spinning its wheels and never ends. I’ve left it running for 12 hours before stopping it, And subsequent runs for several hours before stopping them. The backup is only around 200MB.

I have log files of 1GB, 3GB and 10GB for these backups.

I’ve been reluctant to raise this as I’m concerned it may be something screwy with what I’ve done and plan to delete the repo etc. and start over. The backup is to B2 however the same thing was happening to the same backup source to a Synology NAS.

This is using KopiaUI v0.70.-rc1 on Win 10. It may have been using v20200907.0.80019 initially but I’m not sure.

Further I have the same backup (same source) with the repository on the Synology NAS and it is working fine. This is using KopiaUI v20200907.0.80019 on Win 10.

Thanks for using Kopia.

Couple of questions to confirm and clarify:

  • The source directory (or file) for the back is around 200 MB, right?
  • The issue happens with v0.7.0-rc1 (on Win 10). Both with B2 and the NAS, correct? or just B2?
  • With v20200907.0.80019 it happens on B2, but works (or worked) with the NAS, is that the case?
  • What is your uplink bandwidth to B2?

Any other information you could provide?

v0.7.0-rc1 has a change to improve the checkpointing and continuation of long running snapshots. So, the expectation is that if the inputs are large, it would still make forward progress.

@jkowalski Any other thoughts?

@julio Thanks for helping out.

    Yes

    It was happening with both, but I’ve since disconnected the NAS repository in case that had some effect.

    I only have NAS repository connected at the moment. I’m pretty sure the B2 repository was ok.
  • What is your uplink bandwidth to B2?
    It varies anywhere up to 70Mbps.

  1. In between the “never ending backups” there were some successful ones.
  2. KopiaUI is showing Policies for these two different PC’s which I thought was odd. I assume the Policy for the other PC was retrieved from the Kopia Server or B2.
  3. I assume KopiaUI runs Kopia Server and each PC has it’s own Server and they don’t know about each other?

Bandwidth does not seem to be an issue here. Not sure what it could be though.

Kopia policies are stored in the repo itself. If these two clients (PCs) use the same Kopia repository, then the policies are available to both clients.

By default, each KopiaUI will start a Kopia Server in the same host as the UI. Each of these servers acts as a client to the Kopia repository.
