What is the difference between Kopia versions 2 and 3

What is the difference between versions 2 and 3?

Why when creating a repository in KopiaUI, do I only have the option to choose between 1 and 2, but when creating a repository via cli, it is created in version 3?

Should I convert everything to version 3?

It is nowhere to be found in docs. v1 - was I think original version changed to v2 long time ago. There is even chapter in docs how to migrate v1 to something newer.

But it is indeed puzzling that KopiaUI and CLI create different repos versions. I have tested myself and indeed CLI by default creates repo with Format version: 3 which is not possible to choose in KopiaUI.

@jkowalski - could you please shed some light here?

I’d be interested to know as well. I’m in the process of diagnosing why my local backups are failing. I suspect the hard drive was over-heating but so far, all I can tell is that the folder structure is different and the folders have more files within each.

Well… it probably won’t have to do anything with the different repo format. Maybe check our logs and then open another thread for your issue.

In regards to the actual topic, there is even no option anymore to migrate a repo format, so I’d assume that these are non-breaking changes. The UI is separate from the core, so “KopiaUI” should also be fine with the new v3 - no other assumption would be reasonable since this could silently break repos and I very much doubt that @jkowalski would ever go down that route…

I don’t believe it’s the repo format causing me problems. I’m 99% sure I have a hardware problem (SATA controller or cable) causing intermittent failures to write properly; particularly on large files.

I just noticed the repository folder structure change while testing.
