Can kopia be used to create long term backup of files that may get deleted?

I’m using backups to two reasons: Firstly, to be able to restore my data in case of hardware failure, and secondly, to be able to restore data that I have deleted, and later find out I need it again. I currently create a full backup followed by a number of incremental ones, then start with a full backup followed by incrementals again, etc. By keeping the full and incrementals for a defined period, I get the possibility to restore a file deleted, as long as the last (full or incremental) backup that contains it still exists.

I’m new to Kopia and am impressed by its features and its amazing speed.

From what I understand, Kopia keeps data in snapshots, and its configurable how many of those are being kept for how long. But, a file that was deleted will eventally disappear from the snapshot(s), as they expire. Correct?

Is there a way to configure a profile such that I can define how long even deleted files be kept, i.e. the snapshot(s) coontaining it is not deleted?

Correct but you decide what expires or not:) Snapshots are kept forever unless you apply some retention policy.

If you have enough space you can keep everything forever, or specify more sane rules. Here for example UI retention configuration:

@kapitainsky : +1, however, there’s a reason between an archive and a backup. Although you can use Kopia to achieve that - as pointed out, this is not Kopia’s main purpose and a dedicated archiving solution, will just take all the steps away, which are needed to have Kopia not delete any snapshots by accident.

To mimik an archive, you would have to adjust Kopia’s retention policy to match your archival schedule and that probably means unlimited daily snapshots…

Thank you both for your comments. I’m not trying to achieve an archival solution with kopia. I just want to be able to restore a file that was deleted for a defined period, e.g. two months. Let’s say i’m doing daily backups with kopia. Then I delete a file, of which I later recognize this was an error. I would like to be able to restore any file deleted for two months after deletion.

I don’t consider this an archiving solution, but merely something to help me out if I did something stupid in the recent history.

I’ll have to get a better understanding how the snapshot deletion settings work.

That’s fine - just read through this thread: https://kopia.discourse.group/t/kopia-snapshot-retention-policies-demystified/2941/2

It really explains a lot - if not all, about snapshot retension.
