Is the Repository Server storage identical to direct storage by client?

I was curious if the repository server uses the same repository storage formats as when kopia client directly backs up to a destination object storage.

The reason I ask is if repository server goes down, can a client connect directly to the underlying object store?

I understand this is bypassing security benefits of a repository server, but was hoping it might be possible for certain disaster recovery scenarios.

As you talk about disaster recovery scenarios then the best option is to test:) as whatever answer you get you do not want to learn whether right or wrong when you actually have to perform your recovery plan.

Yes, true, but it is more of an architecture/implementation question regarding the repository format using the repository server vs. using local client.

There is no special repo format for the Kopia Server. As long as you do have the decryption key and you can get the repo to show up on the client in question, you can access the repo.

So… a local filesystem based repo will be usable by a client, if it can actually at least read the files. Also, as @kapitainsky already said… you’ll have to test that thorougly.
